The heat exchanger is a compact and efficient equipment designed for optimal heat transfer. It consists of a pack of corrugated metal plates with portholes for the passage of two fluids. These fluids, between which heat transfer takes place, are directed into alternate channels by gaskets fitted on the plates. The number of plates is determined by factors such as flow rate, physical properties of the fluids, pressure drop, and temperature program.
Gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchangers (GPHEs) are used in this design, offering efficient heat transfer in a compact equipment with a small footprint. Compared to shell-and-tube heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers provide a much larger surface area for heat transfer due to the corrugated plates. This design promotes fluid turbulence and supports the plates against differential pressure.
The heat exchanger offers several benefits, including precision heat transfer with a closer approach temperature, true counter current flow, and 80-90% less hold-up volume. It also has a low overall cost with reduced installation and operating costs, maximum reliability with less fouling, stress, wear, and corrosion, and is environmentally responsible with minimum energy consumption for maximum process effect.
The heat exchanger is easy to expand capacity by simply adding or removing plates on the existing frame. There are different types of gasketed plate heat exchangers available, including industrial, industrial semi-welded, WideGap for specific applications, evaporators, and condensers.
