The Heat Exchanger is a compact and efficient piece of equipment designed for efficient heat transfer between two fluids. It consists of a pack of corrugated metal plates with portholes for the passage of the fluids. The plate pack is assembled between a fix frame plate and a movable pressure plate, which are compressed by tightening bolts. The plates are fitted with a gasket that seals the channels and directs the fluids into alternate channels.
The number of plates is determined by factors such as flow rate, physical properties of the fluids, pressure drop, and temperature program. The plate corrugations promote fluid turbulence and provide support against differential pressure. The frame plate and pressure plate are suspended from an upper carrying bar and located by a lower guiding bar, both fixed to a support column. Connections are located in the frame plate for single or multiple passes of the fluids.
Gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchangers (GPHEs) offer efficient heat transfer in a compact equipment with a small footprint, making them much smaller and more efficient than shell-and-tube heat exchangers. The corrugated plates in the plate heat exchangers provide a large surface area for optimal heat transfer between gases or liquids. These units are also designed with flexibility for easy service and maintenance.
