Heat Exchanger


A heat exchanger is a compact and efficient equipment designed to optimize heat transfer between two fluids. It consists of a pack of corrugated metal plates with portholes that allow the fluids to pass through. The plate pack is assembled between a fixed frame plate and a movable pressure plate, which are compressed using tightening bolts. The plates are fitted with a gasket that seals the channels and directs the fluids into alternate channels.


The number of plates is determined by factors such as flow rate, physical properties of the fluids, pressure drop, and temperature program. The corrugations on the plates promote fluid turbulence and support them against differential pressure. The heat exchanger is suspended from an upper carrying bar and located by a lower guiding bar, both fixed to a support column. The connections are located in the frame plate for single-pass or multiple-pass configurations.


Efficient Heat Transfer


Gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchangers (GPHEs) provide highly efficient heat transfer in a compact equipment with a small footprint. Compared to shell-and-tube heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers offer a much smaller size and higher efficiency due to the corrugated plates, which provide a significantly larger surface area for heat transfer between gases or liquids.


Plate heat exchangers are also known for their flexible design, ease of service, and maintenance.
