Heat Exchanger


A heat exchanger is a vital component consisting of a pack of corrugated metal plates with portholes that allow the passage of two fluids between which heat transfer occurs. It comprises a fixed frame plate and a movable pressure plate, with the plate pack compressed by tightening bolts. The plates are equipped with gaskets that seal the channels and direct the fluids into alternate paths. The number of plates required depends on factors such as flow rate, fluid properties, pressure drop, and temperature program.


The corrugations on the plates promote fluid turbulence and provide support against differential pressure. The frame plate and pressure plate are suspended from an upper carrying bar and located by a lower guiding bar, both fixed to a support column. The connections are located in the frame plate or in both the frame and pressure plates if the fluids make multiple passes within the unit.

Gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchangers (GPHEs) offer highly efficient heat transfer in compact equipment with a smaller footprint compared to shell-and-tube heat exchangers.
